Fun Group Music

Choose from a variety of musical genres, and vocal, as well as instrumental, options. These large group sessions are both an opportunity to grow as a musician and to expand your social circle among like-minded Islanders.

Islander’s Choice

If you participate in any group music activity, NCMC will host your group at its 56 Centre Street location. The only requirement is that the group is 5 or more people, and all are NCMC members. Come use our parlor space, practice areas, or library for your group’s musical activities.

Voga

Adult

Vocal wellness with blissful Sanskrit mantras. Learn some chanted melodies that facilitate enlightenment and strengthen your body.

Nantucket Rock Band

11–18 Years

Rock out by exploring popular music in a fun, coached environment. You can experience what it’s like to work in a professional rock band — understanding not only music but also the importance of group dynamics and collaboration. We’ll talk about songwriting, song selection, chart reading, ensemble skills, improvisation, and performance skills in bands that can include guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and vocals. (Other instruments are also welcome.) Each session culminates in a live performance. Amplifiers, drum sets, guitars, and keyboards are provided. Students should have at least one year of experience playing their instrument and a willingness to explore new music. This class is an island favorite.

Rusty Jam Band

Adult

Join other rusty musicians in these fun-filled sessions to get you back into musical shape. All instruments and all skill levels are welcome. We’ll pick some songs, work on them over the course of the session, then have a performance for friends and family.

Community Chorus

All Ages

The NCMC Community Chorus is open to everyone. The Community Chorus performs a wide variety of music, from traditional to more popular songs. This ensemble culminates in a live concert performance.

Island Voice

Adult

An engaging and social ensemble that gets together weekly to learn and sing tunes from the 60s to today's popular music. (Drop-ins encouraged.) We perform spontaneously around the Island and host videos of our performances on the NCMC YouTube channel. Loosely based on Toronto’s ChoirChoirChoir, Island Voice seeks to provide a fulfilling and socially uplifting off-season activity for adults. Our goal is to to get together and sing with one voice to make something lasting and joyful. The more singers we attract, the better, so tell your friends. Cost: A $5 suggested donation to NCMC.

Jazz Ensembles

14 Years to Adult

This hands-on class helps students develop the skills needed to improvise and perform the instrument of their choice in a jazz ensemble setting. These small groups provide students with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of jazz and develop their skills with like-minded peers. Students are placed in age-appropriate ensembles based on instrument or voice, experience, and availability.

Nantucket’s Community Jazz Band

All Ages

The island’s community Jazz Band offers individuals the chance to hone group music skills. You’ll have the opportunity to perform music in an ensemble setting, and have fun doing so. The band is open to anyone with previous experience with a band instrument and/or who has previously participated in this program. The ensemble culminates in a live concert performance. Our group is a friendly, inclusive, adaptable environment for music lovers of all kinds.

Chamber Orchestra

Adult

Come and play with your new and old friends in a chamber orchestra. This experience is open to adult intermediate orchestra musicians (strings, wind, brass, percussion) who are at least 2–5+ years into their study and/or can read and prepare music comfortably with their instrument.
