The After-School Program is held at the Nantucket High School Band Room Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m, and Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each day features social time, musicianship classes, ensemble rehearsals, and instrumental sectionals.

All island youth grades 3-12 are invited to participate!

Participation in the program is free! Instrument subsidies will ensure that all island youth can participate, even if they aren’t part of the program.

Professional island music teachers are supplemented by Boston conservatory graduates who are supported by donors for residency on the island.

Since NIYO’s inception in 2024, we have served 35 students each year in the after-school program, with enrollment growing year over year. In addition, the NCMC has provided more than 225 free instrument rentals to island students.

NIYO has performed for a wide variety of audiences at:

  • Nantucket High School

  • St. Paul’s Church

  • Saltmarsh Center for Seniors

  • The Congregational Church

  • The Nantucket New School

  • The Nantucket Lighthouse School

  • The Chicken Box

In addition, NIYO provides participants with the opportunity to take off-island excursions, including a trip to the Cape Cod Symphony.

NIYO removes barriers to music education for year-round Nantucket youth, providing inclusive after-school opportunities to learn, perform, and build community through music.
